About

Apt 4 Music is excited to be hosting Make Music Day San Diego in historic Liberty Station! Join us for our third year of putting on this day of celebration and appreciation for our thriving local music scene. Make Music Day is free and open to all – performers and fans alike. Musicians of all genres, abilities, and ages are welcome to take to our stages and lawns in the North Promenade in Liberty Station. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just getting the hang of your first instrument, we’d love for you to be a part of San Diego’s very own chapter of this global event, celebrated in over 100 cities worldwide!

How did Make Music Day start?

It all started 40 years ago in France.

In 1982, Jack Lang and his staff at the Ministry of Culture dreamed up an idea for a new kind of musical holiday. They imagined a day where free music would be everywhere, all around each city: street corners, parks, rooftops, gardens, and store fronts.

Unlike a typical music festival, anyone and everyone would be invited to join and play music, or host performances. The event would take place on the summer solstice, June 21, and would be called FĂŞte De La Musique. (In French, the name means both “festival of music” and “make music”.)

Why participate in Make Music Day?

Make Music Day offers a platform to musicians of all ages and abilities. It supports emerging artists in search of opportunities to perform, and gives established artists the opportunity to inspire the next generation. It’s a celebration of all the ways that musicians enrich our lives with their passion, effort, and message.

Musicians are welcome to set up merch stands and request tips from the audience!
