Strike Up The Band
This year, in partnership with Improv Everywhere, Make Music Day is launching Conduct Us, a participatory performance experience that puts the baton in the hands of the public.
Large ensembles gather in public spaces, sitting quietly behind a sign that reads “Conduct Us.” When someone steps forward and picks up the baton, the musicians follow their lead and the performance begins. No conducting experience is required, just curiosity and a willingness to try.
Conduct Us events will take place across the country, including Cedar Rapids, IA, where the public will lead the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band during their evening concert at Bever Park, and Salem, OR, where participants will conduct members of the Salem Orchestra in a special event honoring Make Music Salem co-founder Mark Green.

Cedar Rapids, IA
Location: Bever Park
The public will lead the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band during their concert.

Mansfield, TX
Location: Geyer Commons
Step up to the podium and take the baton! You’ll have the opportunity to conduct the Mansfield Philharmonic yourself.
Time: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
New York, NY
Location: Astor Place Plaza
The public will conduct the Googler Orchestra, comprised of Google employees (not affiliated with Google), in playing the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
Time: 3:00 PM
Rochester, NY
Location: Corner of Joseph Ave and Berlin St
Stop by and lead the Irondequoit Community Orchestra in playing Vivaldi on the first day of summer!
Time: 1:00 PM
Salem, OR
Location: Corner of State & Liberty
The public will conduct members of the Salem Orchestra at an event in memory of Make Music Salem co-founder Mark Green.
Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
