John Harmon, born in 1935 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, cultivated his musical talents from a young age under the guidance of his mother, who introduced him to the piano. Immersed in jazz from his father's extensive record collection, Harmon's early exposure to legends like Duke Ellington and Art Tatum laid the foundation for his lifelong passion for the genre. After graduating from Lawrence University in 1957 with a degree in music composition, Harmon further honed his skills at the renowned Lenox School of Jazz, studying under the tutelage of jazz icon Oscar Peterson. A highly regarded composer, Harmon's works, blending jazz, Americana, and Native American influences, have been commissioned by esteemed ensembles including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, "The Orchestra" of Los Angeles, the Fox Valley Symphony, and the Santa Fe Chamber Orchestra, solidifying his legacy as a versatile and innovative musical force.
