What Is Make Music Day?
It all started 42 years ago in France In 1982, Jack Lang and his staff at the Ministry of Culture dreamed up an idea for a new kind of musical holiday. They imagined a day where free music would be everywhere, all around each city: street corners, parks, rooftops, gardens, and store fronts. Unlike a typical music festival, anyone and everyone would be invited to join and play music, or host performances. The event would take place on the summer solstice, June 21, and would be called Fête De La Musique. (“festival of music”.)
Amazingly enough, their dream came true. The event has turned into a true WORLDWIDE holiday!! France shuts down on the summer solstice and musicians take over! Almost 11% of French people (7 million people) have played an instrument or sung in public, and 64% of the country (43 million people) comes out from work or home to listen each year. It is now celebrated in more than 1,000 cities in 120 different countries.
Seven years ago, the Fête de la Musique came to the states in New York. Since then, a grassroots volunteers put on yearly events. Today, thousands of musicians – amateurs and professionals, and people of all ages perform in hundreds of free, outdoor concerts. In 2014, to coordinate and expand their efforts, Make Music organizers from across North America founded the Make Music Alliance, who supports cities in their music making endeavors.
This June 21, 2024, 117 cities have organized 4,791 free concerts on one single day. Come be a part of it!
How did this worldwide event come to Salado?
The Salado Music Friendly Board joined the Make Music Alliance with aspirations to bring our community together to create and celebrate music. Music is a powerful tool that can uplift our souls, foster feelings of joy, compassion and love. Music is an integral part of any social gathering. It also soothes our mind, so much that it is now recognized as a form of therapy with hopes to bring tourism to the Village of Salado.
How to Participate
We encourage everyone young and old, musically talented or not to participate. The “Village Beats Drum circle ” event is on June 21st at 6:15 pm. Our newly elected Mayor, Bert Henry will be teaching and leading the drum circle at the gazebo located at the historic Civic Center. The Salado Music Friendly Community Advisory Board are providing drumsticks for everyone to use. (They are limited, so arrive early!).
No musical talent required!!

Mayor Bert Henry has played drums professionally with musicians, both live, and in studios.
If you have a drum, bring it! If you don’t, get creative! Bring a 5 gallon bucket, cooking pot, cardboard box, whatever you can think of. Let’s put Salado on the worldwide music map for the largest drum circle ever created on a historic site!
The drumming session will start with simple beats and progress to two-part rhythms and impromptu drumming.

Friday June 21st – 6:15 p.m. “Village Beats Drum Circle”. Please arrive early as drumsticks are limited. Bring a chair or blanket and something to bang on such as a 5 gallon bucket, cooking pot, box, or anything you can think of. Show us your creativity!
Friday & Saturday June 21st -June 22nd -7:00p.m. Richard Paul Thomas– 423 South Main Street The festivities are FREE and open to the public, offering an exciting lineup of musical performances and dance showcases. Attendees can expect to be enthralled by the dynamic sounds of RpT & Friends, the captivating Art of Dance performances by talented Salado High School dancers, and the soulful energy of Strike the Soul featuring Salado Middle School students Liam O’Neal & Logan Jackson (Sponsored by the Salado Conservatory of Music). The evening will culminate with a closing song by RpT & Friends, ensuring a memorable finale to both nights.
Friday June 21st-7:45p.m.-8:45p.m.- A free performance featuring two Salado local bands. Glen Meloy and the Six String Strangers with Mayor Bert Henry accompanying on the drums.

WHAT IS BUCKET DRUMMING?
Bucket Drumming engages the brain in two fascinating ways. Firstly, there’s a level of concentration involved to hold the beat. Secondly, it simultaneously relaxes the brain through the meditative, repetitive rhythms. A rare mix of brain stimulation and brain relaxation at the same time.
Therapeutic value is gained when people gather to share creative experiences. Bucket Drumming… is great fun and it’s a massage for the brain! Come on out!
