Make Music Salt Lake City

About

Salt Lake City is excited to bring to you Make Music Day which is a day-long, free event that happens on June 21st every year! Salt Lake City is one of 1,000 cities participating in this musical holiday that has become a national phenomenon where communities can come together to share their love of music with each other.

How Does It Work?

The goal of Make Music Day is to provide an equal opportunity for musicians and non musicians alike to play music. Participation is encouraged from all ages and abilities, students and professional artists, original music or covers. The possibilities are endless! We hope to connect the community, regardless of age, race, musical experience, or ability, to make and enjoy music together. Unlike other music festivals, Make Music Events are free for anyone to participate and enjoy.

Where Is It At?

Make Music Day will happen around downtown Salt Lake City with pop up performances, lessons, performance circles, and more! Business, organizations, or venues can register to have a musician play at their location on this date, all day long. We hope music is being played everywhere by everyone!

All performances are free and open to the public!

How Did It Start?

It all started 41 years ago in France.

In 1982, Jack Lang and his staff at the Ministry of Culture dreamed up an idea for a new kind of musical holiday. They imagined a day where free music would be everywhere, all around each city: street corners, parks, rooftops, gardens, and store fronts.

And, unlike a typical music festival, anyone and everyone would be invited to join and play music, or host performances. The event would take place on the summer solstice, June 21, and would be called Fête De La Musique. (In French, the name means both “festival of music” and “make music”.)

Who Can Participate and How?

Musicians: All styles, ages, and experience levels are invited to sign up to perform. This can be anywhere from singers, choirs, rock bands, mariachis, jazz groups, and every other kind of musician. All are welcome. Interested in hosting a free group lesson or musical activity? We encourage you to sign up too!

Non Musicians: Interesting in learning how to play? Or maybe just want to join the fun? We encourage anyone who has no musical experience to come out and see what Make Music Day is all about.

Venues/Businesses: Have a garden, sidewalk, patio, empty space, or a small stage that you want to have music at? Sign up so you can host an artist on June 21st.

Virtual: Can’t make it in person but will want to be a part of Make Music Day? Post videos or photos of you creating music on your social media and use the tag #MakeMusicSaltLake and we’ll share your posts!

Matchmaking is our system of connecting musicians with those wanting to host a performer at their location on June 21st. Once creating an account, musicians can browse venues and businesses and vice versa. We are here to help you connect!
