The Gaits

“Gaits” is an immersive, site-specific music procession on the High Line, where participants use a free iPhone app that turns their GPS movements into musical improvisations. Created with compositions by Lainie Fefferman, Jascha Narveson, and Cameron Britt, the experience transforms walking into a blend of metallic sounds, guitar chords, dulcimer notes, water splashes, and more. Participants should register in advance, download the app, and meet at the southern end of the High Line at the Gansevoort Stairs, where small groups will begin the northbound walk every few minutes. Composer Lainie Fefferman, known for her diverse work across vocal, orchestral, and experimental media, brings her adventurous musical style to the project, drawing on her collaborations with ensembles such as Newspeak, JACK Quartet, So Percussion, and Dither.
