The 12th Annual Flatfoot Flatbush

For the twelfth year, the North Flatbush Avenue BID joins Make Music New York and Porch Stomp! for Flatfoot Flatbush, a winter solstice celebration of music, dance, and community. Dancers, fiddlers, and pickers parade along Flatbush Avenue from Dean Street to Sterling Place, playing old-time string tunes while flatfooting, a percussive Appalachian dance. The event begins with a warm-up and workshop by Megan Downes (City Stompers), followed by the parade, which stops at local businesses to spread holiday cheer. It ends at the 6th Avenue Triangle with multicultural percussive dance performances and participatory group dances. At 4:30pm, an indoor after-party continues the festivities with more music, dancing, and an open jam led by the Flatfoot Flatbush Band, also serving as the BID holiday gathering. String players can join the Flatfoot Flatbush String Band by emailing for music and instructions, and dancers of all styles are invited to participate.
